Filter life depends on incoming water supply...
I'm no expert and what I write below is based on experience and some reading on the subject.
The timer built into this product is a nice reminder to check the quality of the water being produced by the system but doesn't necessarily mean the filters need to be replaced.
The pre-filter removes sediment and reduces chlorine in the water that is harmful to the membrane. If you are on city water then you probably don't have much sediment but you'll likely have chlorine. If the filters aren't replaced frequently enough, then the chlorine may destroy the membrane. If you are on well water like I am, then the pre-filter is mainly removing sediment from the water.
The membrane will last a long time if the pH is low and no chlorine gets to the membrane from a depleted pre-filter. So, if you have low pH and low sediment you may get substantially more time out of your filters and membrane than the manufacturer would lead you to believe.
The timer is...

Overall Good, but Inconsistent
I have found the percentage of contaminants the WHER25 removes from tap water to vary considerably. I have a PPM dissolved solids meter from our ZeroWater filter. That meter shows our (Austin, TX) raw tap water to have, typically, between 185 and 205 PPM contaminants. The WHER25-filtered water this time around is coming out at ~50PPM. Most of the time, I see it at around 15PPM. It appears that this time around, the filters aren't doing as good a job as before.
Expensive, but works well
I use a TDS meter to measure the before and after results of filtering water with these. TDS = total dissolved solids.
These filter about 99% of TDS.
I find them quite pricey though.
